IMO - DSC 16

Monday 01 August 2011 at 12:54 pm The main IMO group that is directly concerned with cargo operations is the Dangerous Goods, Solid Cargoes and Containers Sub-Committee and its 16th meeting is scheduled to be held in the IMO building 19th - 23rd September 2011. With the deadline for submission of papers having passed, most of the papers for the meeting are on the IMO website. This includes recommendations for new work items for the Sub-Committee on Approved Continuous Examination Schemes for freight containers, accidents with ships' cranes and measures to avoid the loss of containers overboard and that includes strengthening the lashing equipment and misdeclaration of container weights. In addition, there are 18 papers to assist DSC to finalise the 36th amendment of the IMDG Code and a massive 95 papers on the start of the latest revision of the IMSBC Code. With reports on the ILO, IMO and UNECE initiative to revise the 1997 edition of the Safe Packing of CTUs, the Container Inspection Programme, amendments to the CSC and the latest casualty reports, it promises to be another busy and relevant week for cargo operations.

Another Cargo Aircraft Carrying Batteries Crashes

Monday 01 August 2011 at 10:24 am Another cargo aircraft carrying lithium batteries caught fire and crashed, killing both pilots.

The Asiana Airlines' B747 freighter was heading for Pudong Airport in Shanghai from South Korea's Incheon Airport when it crashed just off Jeju Island in the south of the country. Asiana officials got a report from the pilot that the Boeing-747 was having mechanical difficulties and would try to make its way to Jeju Island's airport to make an emergency landing. (more)

CADEL EVANS

Monday 01 August 2011 at 10:16 am Our Australian colleagues, all 22 million of them, are chuffed at their countryman's recent win in the world's most prestigious cycling race, the Tour de France. Cadel Evans, at 34, is the oldest cyclist to win the gruelling race in 88 years. He's also the first Australian in the Tour's 108-year history to take the top prize. Australians are enormously proud of Evans, not just because of his win but also because he is a modest and humble man, happily married and clean-living. To Australians young and old he represents the sort of spirit, tenacity and fair play that built the country into what it is. He's someone who all young Australians can automatically look up to as a role model, as well as a person to whom all parents can point in the same way. That's some consensus!

Evans's win has not only boosted the popularity of cycling in Australia, a sports-mad country, but it also highlights the truly international nature of cycling. It's a sport that brings people together on all continents in a wonderful example of the pursuit of athletic excellence.

Cadel Evans, âgé de 34 ans, est le plus vieux cycliste à gagner la course la plus exténuante depuis 88 ans. C'est aussi le premier Australien dans l'histoire du Tour, longue de 108 ans, à remporter le premier prix, Les Australiens sont extrèmement fiers d'Evans, non seulement à cause de sa victoire mais également parce que c'est un homme humble et modeste, qui a un mariage heureux et qui mène une vie saine. Aux Australiens, jeunes et vieux, il représente l'esprit sportif et la ténacité qui ont crée ce pays tel qu'il est aujourd'hui. C'est quelqu'un que tous les jeunes Australiens peuvent considérer comme un modèle à suivre, aussi bien que quelqu'un à qui tous les parents peuvent se référer de la même façon. Voilà l'unanimité des voix!

La victoire d'Evans a augmenté la popularité du cyclisme en Australie, un pays fanatique du sport, mais elle souligne également la nature vraiment internationale du cyclisme. C'est un sport qui réunit les gens sur tous les continents dans un exemple merveilleux de la poursuite d'excellence sportive.
